Mae Khoun

History: Mae Khoun’s former owner, Mr. Savanh from Phonthong village in Phieng district, Sayaboury province, purchased her in Xienghone, Northern Sayaboury, in 2005. She spent her entire adult life in logging operations. As work became scarce in the district and her mahout returned to farming, Mr. Savanh faced challenges in caring for her and found her increasingly difficult to support. Grateful for the years Mae Khoun had dedicated to his family, he didn’t want her to continue working. Hoping she could have a peaceful future, he reached out to the ECC. Mae Khoun arrived at the ECC in excellent physical condition in April 2014, thanks to financial support from the Elephants Umbrella Fund and the ECC. Since then, she has enjoyed a calm life in her new sanctuary, surrounded by plenty of new friends!

Distinguishing features: Tall in size, big ears with pink freckles, beautiful “mango-like” tail, single tush on the right, large abscess on the right shoulder due to past work in logging.

Personality traits: Mae Khoun came from Hongsa, where she grew up isolated from other elephants. As a result, she has some difficulty socialising with the herd unless accompanied by her mahout, and she even prefers to bathe alone. Mae Khoun is highly observant, reserved, and cautious, and she is easily startled by unfamiliar situations. As of March 2018, her close companions are Mae Bounmy, Mae Boun Nam, and Suriya. They spend a great deal of time together in the enrichment area, where we hope Mae Khoun will continue to build confidence and feel more comfortable around other elephants.

Maternity: No known calves.
