History: This elephant was rescued from illegal trade with a Middle Eastern zoo and integrated into our rewilding programme, released into the Nam Pouy National Protected Area (192,000 hectares) in 2019 alongside three other elephants. He now thrives in the wild, happily adapting to his natural surroundings.
Our dedicated ranger team closely monitors his behaviour through GPS tracking, allowing us to gain valuable insights into his social interactions. We have discovered he has left the original herd we rewilded him with to socialise with wild herds, marking a groundbreaking development in our conservation efforts.
Having previously endured a life of degrading circus tricks, he now enjoys the freedom of the forest, exploring, foraging, and forging connections with other elephants. The ECC is proud to have facilitated his transition to a life of dignity and joy, contributing to the larger goal of regenerating Laos’s declining elephant population.
