History: This elephant, part of a herd rescued from illegal trade with a Middle Eastern zoo, was integrated into our rewilding program and released to Nam Pouy NPA in 2019 along with three others. Originally a former logging elephant, she now thrives in the wild, monitored closely by our ranger team through GPS trackers and forest monitoring. The rescue took place just as the elephants were about to be transported from Vientiane International Airport, following an unprecedented order from the Prime Minister’s office, declaring the sale illegal under Lao law. The government decided to send the 13 elephants to the ECC, recognizing it as the only facility in Laos providing adequate conditions for this endangered species. The ECC’s unique welfare and conservation program aims to contribute to the regeneration of the declining elephant population in Laos, freeing the rescued elephants from abuse and illegal traders.
