The Elephant Nursery is a peaceful home for pregnant cows, mothers and calves.
The objective of the nursery is to offer the best environment to the most important elements of the declining elephant population of Laos. Because they are not resting enough or are returned to work too early, many mother elephants stop milking before it is safe for their offspring to feed on solid foods. This often results in the calf getting too weak to survive. Reproductive rates are critically low in Laos and it is of the utmost importance to safeguard currently pregnant cows, young ones and encourage mahouts to breed their elephant.
Set in the protected area around the Nam Tien lake, the nursery has permanent access to water and plenty of natural fodder to graze on. The Elephant Nursery is a safe heaven for pregnant elephants to give birth away from the stress of logging camps.
The nursery elephants is both a quite place where mothers can stay with their offsrping, and an original breeding program conducted jointly by Lao mahouts and the Elephant Conservation Center (ECC). It aims at providing an incentive to mahouts willing to breed their elephants by providing them with a salary, free food and accommodation and free ante & post natal care and monitoring of their newborn calves.
To learn more about our program, come to visit the baby elephants and their mothers!
It is even possible to adopt a baby elephant!
The nursery site is located in the heart of 100 hectares of natural forest of our concession, allowing access to a natural and diverse forage for pregnant females, young mothers and their babies. Veterinarians provide medical monitoring pre and post natal after birth and during the two years preceding the cessation.
Diet and youth safety is our highest priority.
The program helps to ensure a better future for calves born at the Centre. It also offers elephant owners throughout the country a series of measures to encourage them to breed their elephants: the “Elephant Baby Bonus“.
