RUN FOR ELEPHANTS! Congratulations Robert Goupil College in Beaugency, France

Last year we had a visit from a family: Ludovic, Aurélie, Mila, Quentin and Noah who spent a week at the Centre. Upon their return to France, they set up a project at the Robert Goupil College in Beaugency, France. They organized a race and raised more than 1045 euros for 4 different elephants: Suriya the 8-year-old male, Bua Banh our injured male, Mae Bun Nam our 25 years old female and Mae Kham Ohn who is 16 months pregnant.

In total, more than 650 students follow the activity of our Centre as well as their families and friends. Some schoolchildren also go to retirement homes to communicate about our conservation projects. It is 3 generations that meet around the Asian elephants and their protection!

ECC is proud to partner with the Smithsonian Institution to monitor elephants’ hormone levels and contribute to a better understanding of their life cycle and needs.

??Sound the trumpets for Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute research physiologist Janine Brown this #InternationalWomensDay! She heads the Zoo’s endocrinology lab—one of the world’s largest that benefits wildlife species. Her research informs what we know about animal behavior, reproduction and stress.

?Brown is a world authority on elephant reproductive biology, and her lab plays a key role in ex situ management plans for Asian and African elephants in the U.S. and in range countries like Thailand, Myanmar and Sri Lanka. Check out this #EarthOptimism video from 2017 about her work.

ECC: Supporting Laos’ elephant camps

Anabel Lopez Perez, ECC’s biologist in charge of our breeding programme and of the management of our male elephants, and Kan Thissamone, vet assistant and elephant welfare manager, both went to the Mekong Elephant Park (EMP) in Pakbeng for a few days.

The purpose of their visit was to check the health of EMP’s elephants. Anabel has introduced EMP staff with her research on captive breeding. She helped Wendy, EMP’s elephant’s manager to undertake blood samples’ collection on the camp’s female elephants. We will analyze the samples in our laboratory at the ECC.
Kan taught the camp’s mahouts how to proceed with simple veterinary procedures. He trained them on foot care and target training.

It was a real pleasure to share our knowledge with the team at EMP. We hope to come back soon for more exchange!

Returning to the Wild…

On March 19th, 2019, 4 cow elephants and a male juvenile from the Elephant Conservation Center have been released in the Nam Pouy National Biodiversity Area, a first in Laos!

Congratulations to the ECC team: Chrisantha Pinto (Biologist), Michael Falshaw (Forestry Manager), our mahout team Bounsom Soukthavone (mahout of Mae Khian), Mone Sisombat (mahout of Mae Bounmy Niai) Keo Inthavong (mahout of Mae Bounma), Pone Douangkeo (mahout of Mae Noy) and Naly Onsi (mahout of Do Khoun Meuang). This ‘soft release’ will last 4 months during which the elephants will roam freely in the NBA with regular checks by the ECC team. At the end of the experiment, we will compile the data obtained and evaluate the feasibility of proceeding with the last step of our programme: the permanent release of the herd in the Nam Pouy NBA using GPS tracking technology.
