Trees for Elephants

Written by Administrator
Elephants eat trees. Lots of them! To sustain an elephant, the forest must provide each adult with at least 200 kg of fresh natural fodder each day.

In order to develop the forest cover in the protected area and beyond, a Tree Nursery is being established at the Center. Growing trees is an integral part of the Center Environmental Charter and villagers from within the Protected Area will be proposed to work at the nursery; thus protecting their own environment and making revenue from conservation. Our objective is to support farmers, formerly reliant on 'slash and burn' for a living, to develop environmentally sustainable sources of income.

The trees will be planted on old paddy fields and other formerly exploited land parcels.
